Department of Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages

The main research areas in the archaeology of ancient Greece and Rome include the study of both cultures through the development of urban centres and other settlement structures, architecture, art and craftsmanship, and the manufacture of everyday objects. They also encompass the growth of Greek colonies on the Black Sea and the Roman provinces. Research interests further include contacts between the ancient world and the Central European Barbaricum, Greek and Roman numismatics, and the production of tableware in ancient Greece.

Early medieval archaeology research encompasses the study of material and spiritual culture, as well as the socio-economic transformations that took place in the early medieval Baltic Slavic region. It includes investigations of settlement and settlement patterns in Vistula Pomerania, Central Pomerania, and the Lubusz Land; pottery production in the Chełmno–Dobrzyń area; metallurgy, bone and antler working, and glassmaking in Pomerania; commodity exchange in the Baltic region; trade and communication networks in the Polish Lowlands; defensive architecture; and burial customs in the Chełmno–Dobrzyń area.
