Traceology Laboratory
This laboratory features a rich and diverse reference collection, including experimental tools made of flint, stone, obsidian, bone, and antler. It also includes amber and bone artefacts, representing various types of semi-finished products, waste, and matrices bearing technological traces. The entire database has been digitised and is available online for those interested. It contains comprehensive data on experimental tools (currently numbering approximately 2,000 items), which provide comparative material for conducting microscopic examination of prehistoric artefacts at the Institute.
The Traceology Laboratory’s reference resources offer educational possibilities not only for archaeology students at the Nicolaus Copernicus University Institute of Archaeology, but also for anyone studying at other faculties and students from other Polish research centres and abroad (Erasmus+ students and others). Traceology training courses run from a few months up to a year or more.
